With footage shot over 4,000 days, Earth has the distinction of claiming the biggest budget in documentary history with a price tag of more than $40 million.

Moviegoers may question whether it was worth the excessive budget and whether the final outcome reflects the massive efforts of directors and writers Alistar Fothergill and Mark Linfield. Most will agree the answer is mixture of yes and no.

While the cinematography is often breathtaking, there is nothing particularly new in this exploration of harsh environmental influences on the life cycles of animals in the four corners of the world.

Given the G rating, there is care taken to show minimal violence from various predators. In fact theres a more realistic depiction of death and struggle on any given National Geographic television special than in this gentle and quietly delivered film.

This likely wont matter to most viewers and will be a welcomed omission for parents accompanying particularly young children, but it may not be the most realistic way to present the struggles and predatory ways of the animal kingdom.

That aside, other elements of the film are entertaining and visually compelling, including the first aerial shots of Mount Everest. Fothergill and Linfield gained access to a Nepalese Army spy plane in order to film this sequence, and the results are truly breathtaking.”

Release Date: 10 October 2007 (France)

Run Time: 96 min | 90 min

Country: UK , Germany , USA

Genre: Documentary

Trivia: This is the first production ever to shoot aerials of the Mt. Everest. Due to the altitude it is not possible to use helicopters and jet planes are too fast to get proper results. Unique access to a Nepalese Army spy plane enabled the production to shoot the first aerials ever.
